MANAGEMENT OF MAN-MADE LAKES
The Big Bend Environmental Forum had two educational forums concerning
the drawdown of Lake Talquin. The forums were to educate citizens
regarding the benefits and costs of managing manmade lakes. Generally,
drawdowns are performed to enhance fisheries habitat and to impede
eutrophication. Lake Talquin was scheduled for a drawdown in November
of 1997.
The information presented at the forum may have been applicable to
other lakes in Leon County such as Lake Munson, Lake Miccosukee, and
Lake Iamonia. Lake Munson is a man-made lake and the natural
flows from Lake Miccosukee and Lake Iamonia have been impeded
by man-made structures. The functions of a drawdown may also
be applicable to other lakes, such as Lake Jackson, that experience
natural drawdowns.

Tall Timbers Research Station
Tall Timbers hosted an old-fashioned Sunday afternoon picnic
on October 13, 1996, with candidates running for the Leon County Commission,
Florida State House and US Congress races. The forum focused on candidates
who could make environmental decisions that affect Leon County
and the Red Hills Region. The picnic began at 3:00 p.m. on the Beadel
House lawn overlooking scenic Lake Iamonia. Chaired by the League of
Women Voters, the event was sponsored by the Big Bend Enviromental Forum,
picnic compliments of Miss Kate Ireland.
