The Murphy House is believed to have been built in 1838, when Jessie
Willis owned the property. Local tradition indicates the home may have
been constructed by George Proctor, a free black builder. In the 1850s,
the Gothic Revival detailing was added to the Murphy House, which now
houses antique stores.
