PROFILES OF THE BRITISH OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES


Craig Reedie*

Craig was appointed Chairman of the BOA in 1992 having previously been the Badminton representative on the National Olympic Committee.

Born in Stirling and now residing in Glasgow, Craig is married with two children. Qualified as a lawyer, although he has never practiced, he is an independent Financial Adviser and Senior Partner with DL Bloomer & Partners in Glasgow. Craig has been actively involved with the International Badminton Federation since becoming a Council Member in 1970, President from 1981-1984, Chairman of their Business Committee from 1984-1993 and their Technical Delegate in 1992 at Barcelona. He was also a Council Member of the General Association of International Sports Federations from 1984-1992 and their Treasurer from 1990-1992.

Craig lists golf amongst his hobbies and is a member of the Western Gailes G.C., the Royal & Ancient G.C. and Ranfurly Castle G.C. where he was Captain in 1989.

Dr. Neil Townshend

Neil was appointed Vice Chairman of the BOA in 1992 and has been the Luge representative on the National Olympic Committee and their Medical Officer since 1980.

Born in Aberdeen, Neil now lives and works as a General Practitioner in Broadway, Worcestershire. He was a member of the British team for luge since 1976 and competed internationally until 1987 during which time he was National Champion on three occasions, winner of the North American Championships in 1980 and competed at the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid in 1980, he continues to maintain close links with his athletes both as their medical officer and administrator.

Paul Pruszynski

Paul was appointed the BOA Honorary Treasurer in 1992 and had previously been the Bobsleigh representative on the National Olympic Committee.

Born in London and now residing in Surrey, Paul is married with one son and is actively involved with the British Bobsleigh Association having competed internationally for ten years and now as Director and the BBA's representative to the International Federation.

Outside sport, Paul is a Management Consultant and runs his own company. Prior to that, he worked in local government where he developed his consultancy knowledge.

Richard Palmer OBE

Appointed General Secretary of the British Olympic Association in 1977 and, in addition, Dick has held many posts within sport over the years and these presently include Member of the IOC Commission for New Sources of Finance, Member of the IOC Commission for the 1966 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Vice President of the Association of European National Olympic Committees, Responsible for Course Conductor Training and Course Development of Olympic Solidarity Itinerant School in Sports Leadership. He was the Chef de Mission for the Great Britain's Team at every Olympic Games since Lake Placid in 1980. He was also General Team Manager of England's Team at the Commonwealth Games in 1978, 1982 and 1986.

Dick lives in London and, prior to his appointment to the BOA, he was a physical educationalist and coached track & field, rugby football and badminton. He represented Pembrokeshire in Rugby and Athletics and was Captain of the Rugby Club. He is also a keen golfer.

Simon Clegg

Simon joined the BOA as Assistant Deputy General Secretary in 1989 and was promoted to Deputy General Secretary in 1990. Married with two young children, he lives in Hampshire and following two years as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, joined the Armed Forces (Army) in 1980. Simon attended the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and, on leaving the Army in 1989, had achieved the rank of Major. During his service in the Army, he had active involvement in the British Biathlon Team as a competitor from 1981-1984 and as a Manager thereafter. In 1988 Simon was selected as Quartermaster to the 1988 Great Britain Olympic Teams in Calgary and Seoul.

During his employment with the BOA, Simon has led the British Delegation to the European Youth Olympic Games in 1991 and 1993 and was Deputy Leader to the British Olympic Teams at both the Winter & Summer Games in 1992 and the Winter Games in 1994.

Sarah Sharland

Working as Assistant to George Nicholson, the Appeals Secretary, Sarah joined the BOA in 1990 having worked previously for fifteen years in sales & marketing in the UK and during seven years living overseas.

Having been a keen tennis player as a Junior, playing three years at Junior Wimbledon and as a Junior County player, she has retained an active interest in sport. Divorced with two adult sons, Sarah now lives in Putney having previously lived and worked in Europe and Canada.

As the Assistant to the Appeals Secretary, Sarah is actively involved in all aspects of fundraising, working with the commercial sponsors and the voluntary fundraising groups in coordinating their requirements from the BOA both before and during the Olympic Games and this included her participation in the organization of the BOA hospitality as Barcelona in 1992 and Lillehammer in 1994.
