Adult basic education learners rated the following to be their highest priorities in learning to read: (Hayes & Valentine, 1989)

  • Filling out income tax forms
  • Reading and using road maps and city maps
  • Reading and using a thermometer
  • Using a checking account
  • Budgeting money
  • Helping children with schoolwork
  • Reading the Bible
  • Reading and using a voting ballot
  • Filling out job application forms
  • Reading medicine labels
