Dear Timeby Jenny Helms A teacher who has students of varying reading levels should maintain a multilevel reading library within the classroom. Books in this library should include not only "classic literature" but also all types of fiction and non-fiction. That way there is something for everyone. Once a classroom library has been stocked with a myriad of literature at varying levels, you are ready for "DEAR" TIME. "DEAR" is an acronym for "Drop Everything And Read." The students may bring a book of their own to read or they may choose one from the classroom library. Each week set aside time for "DEAR" TIME. I suggest this be the same day(s) and time(s) each week so that the students know to bring their book if they take it home. "DEAR" TIME can be scheduled for as often or as little time as you see beneficial for your students; however, I would suggest at least once a week for thirty minutes. If your students enjoy this time, you might want to extend the day(s) and time(s). "DEAR" TIME should be peaceful and enjoyable for the students. All that should be happening is READING. The objectives of "DEAR" TIME are to increase student reading time, broaden vocabulary, raise reading skill levels, and enjoy reading. Help your timid readers find books that they will enjoy. Get to know your students’ interests and personalities so that you can help them find books to which they can relate.
