Mini-conference Provides Opportunities for Professional Developmentby Jack Newell The Region 1 Mini-Conference (Feb. 8th and 9th ), held at the Fort Walton, Radisson Beach Resort, was an opportunity for Region 1 colleagues to share with one another and be exposed to new ideas, information, and materials to improve programs for adult learners. From the pre-conference on serving adults with disabilities (Curriculum for Adults with Special Learning Needs) to the roundtable discussions, led by the PALSNET consortium of models for serving the adult learner in rural settings, much was available for the taking. Practitioners in DOE-Region 1 should look forward to participating in this annual event. The Curriculum for Adults with Special Learning Needs was presented by Paul Sliger, Callie Perry, and Patti Lowe of Leon County Schools' Adult and Community Education. Attendees received copies of the curriculum and an expert overview of its use from the presenters. Topics covered included Using the Curriculum, Strategies for Teaching, Student Education Plans, Supported Employment, Functional Skills Development, Factors Affecting Learning, Adaptive Resources, and Classroom Activities.
