Coupons and Advertising
ESOL and Basic Literacy Classes

(From:  Teacher Handbook for the Funtional Skills)

  1. Show students coupons and advertisements and explain the difference. Go over key vocabulary; for example: coupon, ad, save, size, flavor, limit, and expiration date.

  2. Have students pair with partners or get into small groups and answer questions such as:

    • Is this a coupon or an ad?
    • How much do you save?
    • How many can you buy?
    • When does it expire?
    • What size (or kind) must you buy?
    • Is there a limit?

  3. When students get back together as a group ask individual groups to report to the class.
