Family Literacy

The National Center for Family Literacy

The National Center for Family Literacy is a nonprofit organization supporting family literacy services for families across the United States through programming, training, research, advocacy and dissemination. The NCFL is a nonprofit educational organization with 501(c)(3) status headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, was founded in 1989 with a grant from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust. The success of family literacy programs based on NCFL's model, the organization's effective advocacy for family literacy initiatives, and its ongoing research and training have built NCFL's reputation. Today, the organization is known worldwide as the leader in family literacy.

The Even Start Family Literacy Program

The Even Start Family Literacy Program addresses the basic educational needs of parents and children up to age eight from low-income families by providing a unified program of (1) adult basic or secondary education and literacy programs for parents, (2) assistance for parents to effectively promote their children's educational development, and (3) early childhood education for children. Projects provide some services directly, and build on existing community resources by collaborating with other service providers.

The Barbara Bush Foundation

Family Literacy and Reading Excellence (FLaRE) Center

The mission of the Family Literacy and Reading Excellence (FLaRE) Center is to support the Florida Department of Education in its statewide implementation of the Florida Reading Initiatives by functioning as a principal informational delivery mechanism for improving the early literacy and reading instruction to children and families across the state of Florida. The Center will serve as: 1) an information clearinghouse for scientifically based reading and family; 2) literacy research; 3) a lighthouse for disseminating information on successful projects; 4) a research/development center to document effective practices based on rigorous research methods; 5) a development center for preservice and inservice teacher training; 6) a linkage for school districts, IHEs, community organizations that have a vested interest in family literacy and reading excellence.

Florida Literacy Coalition

This includes documents containing the guidelines and application forms for the grant programs administered by the Division of Library and Information Services. For each grant program there is a complete Guidelines and Application Package available as well as appropriate forms for filing the required reports. Documents may be copied to your local system where they can be printed for your use.

Florida public libraries have played a vital role in developing adult and family literacy programs. Through networking and partnering with community organizations, adult and family literacy programs are reaching an array of citizens whose needs have not been met by traditional means. Literacy Cyberspace - OWCC

This site has been created to help learners improve their reading, writing, and math skills. They will also find information on how to get and keep a job. In addition, a directory is available to assist them in finding community resources. The Literacy CyberSpace project currently serves all fifteen (15) Region 1 counties in the Northwest Panhandle of Florida: Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton, and Washington.

This takes you to the Merriam Webster site that gives you a word of the day. It defines it and talks about its origins. It also has a link to a word puzzle of the day. Some of these are challenging, but higher-level students could be encouraged to visit this site regularly.

This site gives you a fact for what happened on the current date in Black History. It also allows you to put in any date or a word to search by to find other information. Most short comments have a button to click for more information.

This website offers a math challenge that involves some thinking skills, as well as, math. This could be another site to encourage students to check out regularly. There is also a family corner that shows parents who are not confident in their math how to help their children.
