Amphibians
There are
several possible Frogs and Toads to be found in
Waverly, but one of the most visible is the Southern Toad (Bufo terrestris) that often falls into
swimming pools in large numbers during the summer, especially during
rainy periods. It is not uncommon to find a dozen a day in large
pools, and if left to migrate to your skimmer can easily drown. Since
these animals are useful to help keep down the insect population you
might want to find ways to remove them from your pool. One technique is
to provide an artificial lily pad, as can be purchased
in some stores. They will congregate on such and before your pump
starts up in the morning can be removed to your yard. Another site with
information on such critters, complete with recordings of their calls,
is http://www.uga.edu/~srelherp/index.htm#Amphibians.
If anyone has
pictures of other amphibians you find in Waverly Hills, please send to
waverly@tfn.net and we will post.
