Accessing TFN/Account Introduction/Quotas and Disk Usage
Welcome to Tallahassee Freenet!
This document contains important information! Please do not discard it.
The information below will give you a general overview of what to expect when you use Tallahassee Free-Net. As a new user, you should take the time to read this document to familiarize yourself with the system. TFN is a menu driven system, so users should not have too much difficulty in navigating the system. As always, please feel free to send email to The Questions Team or The Problems Team

Accessing the Tallahassee Free-Net System:Users of the TFN system have two ways of accessing the system. They can either Dial in on our local numbers, or they can access us via the Telnet or SSH protocol. It is important to note that local dial up service is only available in the Tallahassee, Florida Area, within area code 850. Anyone dialing in from outside the 850 area code will incur Long Distance charges. You can also access our services via The WWW.

Homefiles,Mail and Data Storage Information: Data for your account is stored in two places: your incoming mail is stored in /var/spool/mail/your_userid; all other files related to your account are stored in /home/your_userid. Each of these storage areas has a 10mb limit. This means that you can now have 10mb of space for mail, and 10mb of space for saved mail, other files, webpages, etc. There is a file space quota and a file space limit, as well as a file quota and a file limit. It is very important that you maintain your file quotas and limits so that they do not exceed the set limits. Failure to maintain quotas within prescribed limits could result in account suspension for being over quota, or account revocation for being consistantly over quota.

TFN Disk Usage Policy: TFN has also established a Disk Usage Policy It is important that all users take the time to read and understand this and all policies of TFN. The most important one of them being that TFN is NOT responsible for data that is lost or damaged due to system downtime, maintainance, act of God, etc. Users should realize that TFN is not a permanant repository for files, and that they should be prepared to back up any files from thier home directory on a regular basis to avoid possible data loss.

About User Quotas and the "Quota" Command

TFN has extablished quotas for all users of the system, in order that we keep disk usage monitored. Disk space is always at a premium, so it is important to maintain and monitor your disk space usage regularly. it is also important to note that you must keep your account active, and use TFN services on a consistant basis to avoid the possibility that your account would be deleted for inactivity. TFN has enacted a policy for dealing with abandoned or inactive accounts, which will be referened in other helpfiles

There are two ways that you can check your Disk Space Usage. One is to perform a check on your usage through the menu shell. To do this, simply Select "A" for Account Setup. Once there, select "U" for Check Quota. You will then see something that looks like this:

Disk quotas for user [Your User Id and user number]

Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace

/dev/sdb1

/dev/sdb2

(For Shell users, Type 'quota' at the shell prompt to access this)

NOTE: Quota reports all disk space being utilized by a user. In Unix, they call a disk a "filesystem" On TFN, each user has access to two filesystems. One for mail, and one for user homefiles. "sdb1" on fn1 is mail, "sdb2" is for user homefiles.

Definitions: In the above example, there are some things listed that may be confusing:
"Blocks" on the filesystem means how much disk is in use by you in each system.
"Quota" on the file system means that this is how much space you are allowed to use.
"Limit" means that you can use the space, but cannot exceed it.
"Grace" means the time that you are allowed to remain over quota.
The same information applies to files. You have a quota, a limit and a grace.

Quota Types and Limits:There are two different types of quotas: a file quota, and a disk quota. Each of them have quotas and limits. If you exceed the quota, you will get a warning - If you exceed the limit, you will no longer be able to login. This depends on the way that a system administrator sets up the quotas.
