As stated in This file (connect via telnet) Telnet is disabled. This is because Telnet is an outdated and insecure protocol for connecting to internet computers. While TFN understands that there will be users that will want to connect to TFN via Telnet, It is suggested that users consider using the more secure SSH protocol. All users that have the startup.sh as thier shell will be logged in with the Bourne Again Shell. (bash) TFN has now pointed startup.sh to the bash shell to make user logins possible.MAINTAINED BY: Brian S. "Buddy" Baker
DOWNLOAD THE SSH CLIENT:In order to connect to TFN via SSH, you will need what is known as a Client On TFN, you can download a client for SSH connection by going to My SSH Download link (SSH SecureShellClient3.2.9.exe) (which is the free Non-commercial version).
INSTALL THE SSH CLIENT:Once you click on the Exe file, let the client install. Once it does, you may be asked to reboot your machine to allow the install of the client to finish - If it asks for a reboot, allow it to happen.
CONNECT TO TFN USING THE SSH CLIENT:To quickly connect to TFN Click on the Quick Connect button at the top left. You will then see a box come up that will have some information:
HOST NAME: freenet.tfn.net or tfn.net
USER NAME:enter your TFN username (ie: joeuser)
PORT 22
AUTHENTICATION: [Profile Settings] (showing) Change this to Password
The italicized information should be entered in the HOST NAME and USER NAME Boxes - The Default Athentication Method is set to '[profile Settings]' Press the Connect button. The Client will attempt a connection to the server. Once you successfully connect to the server, you will have the option of saving the connection information in your Profiles folder - So that you can then click the "Profiles" Button and you will see the connection profiles you have saved. I recommend saving the connection as "Freenet" or "TFN"
Users should choose to leave the port number and the Authentication method set at 'Password' and Port set at '22' (this is the default port for SSH connections.) Unless you plan on using another method, this is the easiest and quickest way to connect to the server. Note that for each connection using this method, it will allow you to enter your password each time you connect, unless you use the "new terminal window" icon, in which case, you will instantly have another connection window open. with SSH Secure Shell Client, you can also connect via Secure FTP (SFTP) which is explained Here - in the SFTP Connection Helplink File
