Homepages on TFN: Introduction
The World Wide Web (WWW) is a vast and exciting place - Everyone sees a webpage, or has heard of one - This
Page will assist you with the creation of a homepage. A homepage is a place where you can upload documents that
you wish others to see - It is your special place to display documents, pictures, or interesting information. You may hear people refer
to a homepage as a "HTML Page" "Webpage" "www page" "webspace" or other terms - these all refer to the same thing.
On TFN, your web address would be given in the form of: http://www.tfn.net/~userid
create your homepage via ftp
You can use your browser to ftp your files to TFN
- ftp://your_user_id@ftp.tfn.net/public_html/
You can do it from a dos prompt or Win95/98 (Start - Run - ftp)
- ftp to: ftp.tfn.net
- login (using your tfn user_id and password)
- mkdir public_html
- cd public_html
- put full\path\on\your\hardrive\index.html
Or if you don't already have it, you can download WS_FTP LE and its
companion text file. WS_FTP is a great
windows program that allows you to see/manipulate the directories/files on your
computer and the host computer simultaneously.
setting up your homepage
For help on using HTML and building your website, read one or more of the following:
For a quick start, check out
Qpage.Com.
To ensure that your documents are correct and can be read by
browsers other than Netscape:
- Check the syntax of your documents by running them through
weblint. Weblint will
find and report errors to you that Netscape tolerates, but which will render
your page unreadable to other browsers.
- Read a couple of style guides:
Finally, there are lots of resources out there, check out WWW Development Resources.
There's a sounds archive at
sunsite.unc.edu
also. Check out Google
for a list of sites that have backgrounds available. Lots of counters and clocks may be seen at
The Museum of Counter Art. Free
counters are available from www.digits.com
tfn cgi support
You may use these on your homepage. Copy the code and personalize it per the instructions.
MS FrontPage/other
Microsoft's FrontPage is a product designed to work with MS web servers. TFN uses a UNIX web server
which is not compatible with MS FrontPage. Therefore FrontPage extensions will not work on TFN.
