“Eastgate, where everyone is a good neighbor"

                 OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2001

PRESIDENT’S CORNER: Calvin J. Vice, Sr.

Eastgate moves into a new season and into a new time for our nation. Family, friends, neighbors and loved ones will be even more important in the days ahead. Be sure and say a word of love and encouragement to someone close to you.

Watch for articles in this newsletter about our fall activities. Our neighborhood has a tradition of strong participation. Volunteer for a service role, and enjoy the activities.

Safety continues to be everyone's job. Speed limits do not keep us safe; use of caution and consideration for others will be the important thing to keep everyone safe. Watch for children and pets.

A special word of thanks to all those who help with the details of keeping the neighborhood association actively meeting the needs of the residents.   See you in the neighborhood.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?

by Mabel Sherman

Ø       For identification with the Tallahassee Police Department, Eastgate is in the BROVO District. Officer Tommy Tennison is our contact person.

Ø       Donald L. Wilson is our resident safety person. Donald lives on Byron Circle.

Ø       The ENA Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6 PM. The board meets at 3005 Whisper Court. You are welcome to attend these meetings.

Ø       I need a willing worker to create a database for our neighborhood directory. Please call me at 386-2761.

Ø       The park needs some grooming. Simply do what you can at any time that you can. If you have some soil to spare, it would be nice to place it in and around the picnic tables and benches where the water has eroded the soil.

Ø       We need another water pump for the fountain. If you would like to purchase a heavy-duty pump, please give me a call at 386-2761, let’s talk.

FINANCIAL REPORT

By Deborah Mooney

At our last meeting it was decided that we should include our operational budget in each newsletter. This is our way of letting you know how your money is used. As with any organization, there are expenses that are ongoing. In addition, to the monthly expenditure, there are the periodic expenditures, repairs on the shed, printing newsletter, membership dues to CONA, County, and City applications, letters to residents and postage, as well as the annual audit. The itemized budget will give the dollar amount for your review. If you have not paid your membership dues, please do so. We are operating on bare bones at this point. If you aren’t sure of whether you have or have not paid, please call Mabel at 386-2761 for that information.

ENA FALL FELLOWSHIP

By Martha Leinonen

Mark your calendar for October 28, 2001 from 4 – 7.  ENA will hold our Annual Festival that afternoon.  This year we are calling it ENA Fall Fellowship.  We want everyone to come meet their neighbors and have fun eating, singing, and visiting.  Of course, we will need your help.  Volunteers are needed to bring chili and/or cakes (individual wrap desserts).  We will also need volunteers to set-up two hours before it starts (ok, men, that means you). We will have a cake-walk, and games for all ages as well as a costume contest.  If you can help, please call Martha Leinonen, ENA Fun Coordinator at 385-3195.  Be on the look out for our ENA Fall Fellowship Flyer with more information.

UPDATE ON THE CITY GAS EXTENSION SURVEY

By Wanda Eberhart

I am happy to announce that over two-hundred-fifty (250) “Natural Gas Extension Survey” Forms has been submitted to the City of Tallahassee from Eastgate Neighborhood Community during this three year project.  As you know the City is on an October-September Fiscal Year and will be reporting their new 2001-2002 fiscal year budget soon.  Hopefully, we will be included in that budget projection.  I just wanted to thank the many neighbors who opened their doors to me during my walk throughout the community.  It made me feel good when they invited me to come into their homes while they completed the survey forms.  Many offered me something to drink on those hot summer days. Thanks again for your cooperation on this project and hopefully we will be hearing from the city soon.  It wouldn’t hurt if you wanted to call Becky Cannon with the Gas Sales & Programs (891-6113) to let her know we are very interested in getting the natural gas extension in our neighborhood. If you have any questions, please call me anytime.

America, staunch, undismayed, your spirit is our might: No splendor falls on feudal walls upon your mountain’s height. But shafts of Justice pierce your skies to light the way for all.

A world’s great brotherhood of man, that cannot, must not fall . . . . . . Our fathers gave their lives that we should live in freedom’s light – Our lives we consecrate to thee, our guide the Might of Right.

Author: Arthur N Hosking

In support of our national leaders and love for our country, the flag at the entrance to our community was flown at haft mast.  Thanks to resident Eda McGraw and the residents on Wembley Way who held a candlelight vigil for our country. Thanks to all of Eastgate for displaying your flags, ribbons, banners, and other patriotic symbols. Finally, thanks to the yet unknown person or persons who took the time to place red, white and blue ribbons and/or flags on the mailboxes of our streets. What a community!!! There is just no better place to live than in Eastgate.                                                                                                                                           By Mabel Sherman

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
